Tanzania works well for a family safari: the northern parks lie close together, game drives happen in a vehicle with a pop-up roof, and Zanzibar adds beach days at the end. A few points make the trip easier for children.
Short drives keep the days easy: start with Tarangire or Lake Manyara, then the Ngorongoro Crater, and add the Serengeti if the children are happy in the car for longer. Game drives usually start early and pause at midday, which suits a child’s rhythm. Binoculars for every child and a simple animal checklist make long drives fun. On a private safari the family sets the pace and stops whenever someone needs a break.
The summer school holidays from late June to August fall in the dry season, a very good time for game viewing; lodges fill early, so book in good time. December to February is warm and mostly dry, with calving in the southern Serengeti. April and May bring the long rains.
There is no fixed rule. Many lodges welcome young children, but long game drives are easier from school age. Some lodges, walking safaris and canoe trips have minimum ages, so check when you plan.
Kilimanjaro National Park sets a minimum age of 10 for climbs to the summit. Younger children can join short forest walks near the park gates. Check the current rules before you book.
Yes, as long as everyone stays inside the vehicle on game drives and follows the guide in camp. Many camps have no fences, so children should never walk alone after dark.
