Several routes lead to Uhuru Peak, the 5,895-metre summit of Kilimanjaro. They differ in days, scenery, crowds and whether you sleep in huts or tents. More days on the mountain give the body more time to adjust to the altitude.
Marangu is the only route with huts (Mandara, Horombo and Kibo) and goes up and down the same way. Machame climbs from the south-west across the Shira Plateau, past the Lava Tower and up the Barranco Wall, and sleeps lower than it climbs during the day, which helps with the altitude. Lemosho starts further west in quiet forest, crosses the whole Shira Plateau and joins the Machame route near the Lava Tower. Rongai starts near the Kenyan border on the drier northern side. The Northern Circuit is the longest route and the quietest.
For a first climb, Machame or Lemosho with 7 or 8 days is a common choice, because the extra day helps the body adjust. Marangu suits climbers who prefer a bed in a hut. On every route the summit night starts around midnight from the high camp, Kibo Hut or Barafu Camp.
The number of days matters more than the route. Longer itineraries such as Lemosho or Machame with 7 to 8 days give the body more time to adjust to the altitude.
Its path is the gentlest and it has huts, but the shorter itinerary leaves less time to adjust to the altitude, so it is not easier at the top.
No ropes or technical skills are needed. Good fitness and broken-in walking boots matter most; the Barranco Wall on the Machame and Lemosho routes needs some easy scrambling with your hands.
